GrantMe Reviews: How Janaeya won the $40,000 Beedie Luminaries Scholarship

Janaeya, a Grade 12 student in BC won a total of $48,500 with GrantMe's support, including the coveted Beedie Luminaries Scholarship! With her community efforts in being a dance teacher, and working part-time in a dentist's office, GrantMe has supported Janaeya with her big dreams! "Tell me about yourself!"

"I'm currently a Grade 12 student in a little town in British Columbia called Castlegard!"

"How many scholarships did you apply to? How many did you win?"

"I applied to around 34 scholarships with GrantMe and through my school. I won $48,500 in total. Some of those were from entrance awards for schools and the biggest one I won was the Beedie Luminary Scholarship which was $40,000!"

"What was your most unique challenge?"

"So, I know a lot of students probably say the same thing about this so I'm going to try to not say the same thing.  The selection process -  you need a lot of motivation for it, and so that's what I found I lacked. Most of it was definitely just getting up, figuring out which ones I needed to apply for, and when I had time to fit it into my school schedule and my work schedule. So, I found that that was very difficult for me, but GrantMe was always sending me emails! I was always up-to-date on the Instagram page, so I always had a constant reminder. I also kept thinking that it would be so awesome to win all these scholarships and that I really need to get on it. I just had to keep thinking about my future. I had lots of family support and lots of GrantMe support!"

"What was your favourite GrantMe tool?"

“Definitely the Essay Wizard. I'm a good writer, but sometimes I miss things. I didn't follow the STAR structure and it just kind of got mumble jumbled, but they understood what I was trying to say which was the best part! They knew I was almost there, and they always helped me. They definitely helped me the most with a grammar, punctuation and stuff like that. That was the nicest thing. You get an idea, you write it down and you send it in. They structure it for you, they tell you what you need to fix. That was literally my favourite part. I loved it so much. Then, you keep working on it. Once you do a couple of them, you know what to expect because you know how to fix your next essay after that. So, each time I submitting less submissions because you're kind of understanding it. I also really love the tracking sheet because I don't really love to keep an in-person copy of it so having it on my computer was really nice and I could just click ‘apply’. It was really nice!"
